Summer 1989, East Germany. Adam works as a tailor, Evelyn as a waitress. They are planning a vacation together when Evelyn finds out that Adam is cheating on her and decides to leave for the holiday on her own.

The law has finally lifted the barrier that prevented her from entering this profession. She hasn't told her family or her fiancé Jürgen about her application because she rightly fears a headwind.
Dr. Sonja Martin is a neurosurgeon at a large clinic in Leipzig. She loves her job. But she has bigger plans: She wants to become a clinic director. She pursues this career goal with ambition. But she has lost sight of the important things in life. Sonja gradually realizes this when she involuntarily has to put up her grandchildren Clarissa, Paula and little Benedikt in her apartment for a few days.
Wealthy Elvira Hertzfeld and clarinet-playing homeless man Paul Heisenberg would probably never have spoken to each other if Elvira's elegant dog Minou hadn't fallen for Paul's good-natured St. Bernard Sunny. But when the enthusiastic Minou pulls her mistress to the ground in the pedestrian zone, Paul takes care of Elvira, all cavalier. It is the beginning of a tender friendship in which both gradually put aside their reservations. Elvira even decides to offer Paul, who is at a loss for a place to sleep, the garden shed in her villa as emergency accommodation.
