Ukraine, the village of Semyhory. Two sons get married in the Kaidash family - Karp and Lavrin. But there is no peace in their home. Constant quarrels in the family between the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law force the sons to share their father's property. Native people become enemies when it comes to the distribution of property.
Journalist Tamara Malysheva is deeply unhappy in her personal life with her alcoholic husband, Andrey. The editorial office sends Tamara to a small Ukrainian village to investigate the reasons why a soldier who had just come out of the army stabbed his mother-in-law with an axe and the 11 years of strict prison sentence he received for it. There she meets Yuriy, a man who has been "waiting for her all her life" and with whom she falls in love without looking back. Further events develop.
The film tells the story of the difficult and tragic fate of a Prykarpattia family over several generations. The events take place in the difficult 30s and 40s. Zhmeniak's father tries to gather more land in his possession by all means. But not everyone understands that he will divide all that land between his children when it comes time to die anyway, and they are simply jealous of his possessions. Meanwhile, the children have their own dramas and tragedies, because it's one thing to love someone, and another thing to know what the father thinks about it, and who he sees as wives for his sons. And then there are changes of government, and then there is the war...
